Apple said on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, that a small number of iPhone Duo screens have an inner-display issue and that owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement. The Verge and 9to5Mac published the statement three days after the foldable went on sale on Friday, Oct. 23.

What Apple said about the iPhone Duo screen

The statement, which The Verge and 9to5Mac both printed in full, opens with praise for early buyers and then names the fault.

The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.

Apple told The Verge that most units are not susceptible and that the problem shows up quickly on the units that have it. Reuters, in a dispatch carried by CNA, reported the same timing. Apple did not comment on a cause, Reuters said.

9to5Mac told readers that a replacement does not require AppleCare+, the paid damage plan, and that people who bought the phone from a carrier should call AppleCare rather than the carrier. CNBC described the offer, in its own words, as a replacement under Apple's AppleCare warranty. The quoted statement names AppleCare and does not mention the paid plan.

Apple has not given a count of affected phones. The BBC, 9to5Mac and CNBC each cautioned that some photos online appear to have been made with artificial intelligence. A picture by itself does not prove a failure.

Where the inner display breaks

Owners who described a failure pointed to the same area of the phone. The Verge said reports often showed a bright line from the center of the inner display toward the right side. The BBC said some owners also heard a crunch while opening the phone. CNBC quoted iFixit technician Shahram Mokhtari, in the teardown video: "Many of these damage reports describe folding or unfolding the phone, hearing a crunch, and pushing past it."

iFixit published the teardown under a byline of Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026. Elizabeth Chamberlain, Arthur Shi and Shahram Mokhtari wrote that the team used teardown footage, patents and CT scans to build a model of the hinge. In a closing simulation, they wrote, a center support bar fails to drop far enough, and the screen's curved fold comes down on it, "creating a small stress hotspot near the reported break location."

Reuters reported that Apple did not immediately comment on those findings. iFixit also called the Duo the most repairable foldable it has tested, with a provisional score of 5 out of 10. It said an out-of-warranty inner-screen replacement costs $999. The Verge, on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, published Apple's repair price list and put inner display damage at $999 without AppleCare+, or $99 with that plan.

The BBC reported that Justin Lokos, a buyer in New York, posted lines across the right side of his display and later a photo of a replacement, and thanked an Apple store there. The Verge reported that a buyer in Australia said an Apple store replaced a unit "on the spot." Those are single accounts, not a tally.

What the launch and the repair bill show

Apple's newsroom said the iPhone Duo reached stores on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026. John Ternus and Deirdre O'Brien greeted customers at Apple Domain NORTHSIDE in Austin. Greg "Joz" Joswiak and Vanessa Trigub did the same at Apple Fifth Avenue in New York. The photo essay also names stores in London, Mumbai and Shanghai. The BBC reported that Ternus became chief executive in September 2026, succeeding Tim Cook. The Verge also described him as the new chief executive.

Apple's U.S. store lists an unlocked phone at $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB. The U.K. store uses the same figures in pounds, from £1,999 to £3,199. The U.S. page calls the inner panel a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding display and the cover screen a 5.4-inch display. A footnote measures them, as rectangles, at 7.58 inches and 5.36 inches on the diagonal.

In that Oct. 14 report, The Verge said preorders would open Friday, Oct. 16, at 8 a.m. Eastern, ahead of the Oct. 23 sale. Reuters said the first online orders sold out in minutes, and that stores had tight inventory and lines. It described the phone as unfolding like a passport booklet.

Francisco Jeronimo, a vice president at IDC, told Reuters the replacement offer was the "right first step." He added, "We all remember when Samsung experienced problems with the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, but it also showed that a fast and transparent response can contain the damage to a category."

What is still unknown is how many phones share the defect, whether later shipments use a different hinge, and whether Apple will replace a Duo that has not yet shown the lines. The statement covers users who experience issues. It is not a recall of every unit.
