Mastercard Agent Pay early access opened on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, Decrypt and PYMNTS reported. The company said developers can test a way for an AI agent to pay for digital services inside a budget a person sets. In a Cloudflare Connect demo, Mastercard said one agent made nine payments to two merchants on a single approved budget.
What Mastercard Agent Pay early access includes
Decrypt reported that the early-access kit includes buyer-side and seller-side APIs, a toolkit, and a sandbox. PYMNTS, citing a release provided on Tuesday, Oct. 20, said the system builds on x402, an open protocol Mastercard uses so a digital service can ask to be paid. The service answers with "402 Payment Required." The agent then signs a voucher, a promise to pay inside a limit a person already set.
Decrypt's account of the demo has a marketing agent planning a protein-bar campaign. CryptoBriefing named the two merchants as AIsa, for social-media research, and Cloudflare AI Gateway, for campaign images. All nine payments came from one budget. PYMNTS quoted the company: "The agent paid only for what it used, while Hype stayed in control." Hype is the marketing agency in that example.
The timing is not described the same way in every story. PYMNTS wrote that Mastercard was planning to show the tool at Cloudflare Connect "this week," and it used the name "Agent Pay for Machines Discovery Service." Decrypt treated the demo as something that had already run on Tuesday, Oct. 20, and it did not use those words. Mastercard's Oct. 20 post is written as a demonstration at the conference that day. It does not use the name Discovery Service.
Decrypt reported that Jorn Lambert demonstrated a live transaction. PYMNTS's quotations from the Tuesday, Oct. 20 release do not name the presenter. Fortune, on Wednesday, June 10, identified Lambert as Mastercard's chief product officer.
Cloudflare's event page places Cloudflare Connect at Moscone West in San Francisco from Monday, Oct. 19 through Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026. Decrypt said the early-access step was shown there.
The pilot list also splits. Decrypt named end-to-end pilots with Cloudflare, Ant International, AWS, BVNK, and Coinbase. CryptoBriefing named Cloudflare, Coinbase, Base, Ant International, BVNK, and AIsa, and it did not name Hype. Mastercard's Oct. 20 post names Cloudflare, Ant International, AIsa, Base, BVNK, Coinbase, and Hype. It does not name AWS. Each news account drops names from the company's list, and Decrypt adds AWS.
What the June 10 release promised
Mastercard introduced Agent Pay for Machines on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in a Business Wire release carried by Nasdaq. The dateline is Purchase, N.Y., at 8:00 a.m. Eastern. The release said the service would permission, orchestrate, and settle machine payments across cards, accounts, and stablecoins. It said more than 30 companies were early supporters, including Adyen, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Stripe, and BVNK.
Lambert said in that release: "Machine payments can make it possible for services to be bought and sold among agents at fundamentally different scales than payments today — very high volumes, very small values, very fast and at extremely low latency."
Fortune reported the same day that a Mastercard spokesperson said permissions people grant their agents would be stored on a blockchain. The spokesperson said those records would start on Polygon, Solana, and Base, among others. CoinDesk also reported that permissions and credentials would sit on those three chains, and that wider access was planned before the end of 2026. CoinDesk, in a story dated Wednesday, June 10, said the company unveiled the service "on Tuesday," the day before, which was Tuesday, June 9. The wire date and Fortune's article both put the announcement on Wednesday, June 10.
The October post does not say Mastercard dropped the June permission logs. It says the voucher exchange happens off-chain, at machine speed, and that sellers can combine vouchers and redeem them later. Decrypt reported that Coinbase Developer Platform provides the wallet, that Base is the on-chain settlement network, and that BVNK acts as the agent wallet through Mastercard's Global Money Platform, in fiat or stablecoins. The October accounts do not say whether the June logs on Polygon and Solana are still in use.
Cloudflare's Monetization Gateway documentation, updated Sept. 30, 2026, is a separate page from the demo script. It says the gateway is a closed beta, that buyers and sellers must be in the United States, and that settlement runs through the Coinbase x402 Facilitator. Mastercard's post says the demo's "402 Payment Required" reply comes through that gateway. The post does not mention a United States limit. The two write-ups do not say how those settlement paths fit together.
What neither account prices
No October report gives the dollar size of the nine payments, or the budget Hype approved. None states what Mastercard will charge a developer, or the day early access becomes a product anyone can switch on. Fortune quoted Lambert in June: "Am I expecting that this is going to be a huge revenue driver for Mastercard next year? No." He added that he thought it could be a meaningful market over the following five years. That line is a June forecast, not a result from the October demo.
Early access is a test of software that can spend. It is not a cue to buy or sell Mastercard shares, a stablecoin, or any token used in the demo.
