| The dollars | SpaceX closed at $146.03 on Friday, Oct. 16. The Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 file counts 72,021,348 people under 18. One share each would be about $10.52 billion. |
| The prompt | On Sunday, Oct. 18, Musk told Anthropic to give shares directly to the public. Anthropic had just pledged 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund, if stockholders approve. |
| Still unsaid | Musk did not define "kid," name a way to deliver the shares, or say how many SpaceX shares he owns. Anthropic has not set the valuation baseline for later increases. |
Elon Musk wrote on X on Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, that he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every kid in America in 2027. The post promises a SpaceX share for every child and says the gift will be the first of many. It does not say who qualifies or how the shares would change hands.
The Monday, Oct. 19 post and Sunday, Oct. 18 reply
Musk published the pledge at 3:52 a.m. Eastern time on Monday, Oct. 19. The post on X reads: "Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many." The post stands alone. It is not marked as a reply.
At 4:16 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, Oct. 18, he replied to the company's account: "I recommend giving the shares directly to the public." That Oct. 18 reply does not mention SpaceX or children. The BBC and CNN also reported a further line, "This is what I will be doing." That sentence is not in the Oct. 18 reply or the Oct. 19 pledge.
CNN described the share offer as Musk's answer to Anthropic. The timing fits that reading: Anthropic posted on Sunday, Oct. 18, and the SpaceX pledge followed on the morning of Monday, Oct. 19. Musk's Oct. 19 post does not name Anthropic.
What one SpaceX share for every child is worth
Space Exploration Technologies Corp. Class A shares, traded on Nasdaq as SPCX, closed at $146.03 on Friday, Oct. 16, Yahoo Finance's price history shows. The Thursday, Oct. 15 close was $148.62. CNN reported that the stock began trading in June and that the listing was the largest initial public offering on record.
The Census Bureau's national age file for July 1, 2025, lists the resident population by single year of age. A tip sheet dated Thursday, April 9, 2026, points to the estimates file. In the both-sexes rows, ages 0 through 17 sum to 72,021,348. The all-ages total in that file is 341,784,857.
One share at the Friday, Oct. 16 close for each of those 72,021,348 people comes to $10,517,277,448, about $10.52 billion. Musk did not publish that figure. The population date is Tuesday, July 1, 2025, so the sum leaves out later births, deaths, and 18th birthdays. He wrote "kid," not an age in years.
Nasdaq's quote summary on Monday, Oct. 19, listed a market capitalization of $1,991,947,301,685, about $1.99 trillion. CNN called SpaceX a $2 trillion company. At the Nasdaq number, $10.52 billion is about 0.53 percent of the market value. The summary was pulled while the stock was in premarket trading, so the capitalization can move once the regular session opens.
Anthropic's 5% public benefit fund
Anthropic's announcement is dated Sunday, Oct. 18. In "Investing in the public benefit," the company said that, subject to stockholder approval, it will commit 5% of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. An additional 2% can be added at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in company value above a set baseline. The post does not give the baseline. It gives no date for publishing those milestones.
The fund is to be a wholly owned limited liability company rather than a 501(c)(3). Anthropic wrote that none of the equity it holds will be used for lobbying or political giving, in the United States or abroad. The company said the fund might make large donations to nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations. It named labor-market strain as one example, and said it has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing that issue.
The same post says the co-founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings, and that about half of employees take part in a donation match. With the new commitment, Anthropic said, roughly 20% of its shares will be dedicated to the public good, plus any shares added if valuation milestones are met.
On Friday, Oct. 16, the company reported that junior technical hires fell from 27% to 9% of technical hiring, even as technical hiring grew in absolute terms.
CNN put the 5% stake at $48 billion, using what it called the company's latest valuation. Anthropic's Oct. 18 post states no dollar value, so that $48 billion figure could not be checked against the announcement.
Who would get a share is not defined
Musk did not say whether a kid must be under 18, a citizen, or a resident, or whether "in America" means the United States only. He did not name a broker, a trust, or a federal savings account. He did not say whether the shares would carry restrictions, or when in 2027 a transfer would happen.
He also did not say how many SpaceX shares he owns. The Oct. 19 post says the shares would be his, not a new issuance described by the company. Without a holding figure, the post itself cannot show whether $10.52 billion is a small piece of his stake. No SpaceX statement cited here describes how the shares would be delivered.
